How the lists are built

Names are drawn from the 5.1 SRD background materials — open-license source. Each race's list is hand-curated, with conventional family / clan / virtue names included where the culture uses them (no surname slot for Half-orcs, since the SRD doesn't define a convention for them).

Choosing well

Pick more than you need. Generate 25, scan for the one that fits the NPC's vibe — fierce vs. funny vs. forgettable. The first name that catches you is usually the right one. Run it again if none feel right.

In the app

Dungeon Diary's NPC creator suggests names automatically, grounded in the faction or settlement they belong to (a Dwarven citadel NPC gets Dwarven names; a port city draws from a more varied list). Pickier than a generic generator. Try the demo to see it.
